The Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination is the comprehensive exam that counseling master's programs give near graduation. It is 160 multiple-choice questions, 20 in each of the eight CACREP core areas, and it leads to no license: the score goes to your program, which decides where the pass line sits. Facts below are checked against the CCE handbook (rev. March 25, 2025) and the August 2024 content outline.

The 8 CACREP core areas
The outline gives every area the same share, 12.5% of the exam: 20 questions, of which 17 count and 3 are unmarked tryouts. The NCE is built on the same eight areas, so each area has one page on this site, shared by both exams, with practice questions and the common traps. Two topics have their own pages because every exam here touches them: code-level ethics on counseling ethics and named theories on counseling theories.
Your program uses the result to judge what you retained across eight courses, and it gets national data to compare its students with. For you, the exam is a graduation requirement, nothing more: passing it does not count toward a state license or the NCC (National Certified Counselor).
Who sits it: only students of a participating program. You cannot register yourself; the program coordinator does it.
When: your program decides. Columbus State, for one, recommends sitting it within two weeks of finishing coursework (exit-exam page).
What your program can add: essay questions or a specialty section such as addictions or mental health counseling, scored by the program itself (handbook, p. 8).
What comes after: a license needs the NCE or the NCMHCE, depending on your state.
Same areas as the NCE, different job
Because the CPCE and the NCE share the CACREP areas, studying for one covers most of the other. They differ in what they decide. The NCE is a licensure exam: 200 questions, a cut that its owner sets for each form, and your state board's approval to sit. The CPCE is your program's exam, scored against your program's cut.
Timing matters if you graduate in 2027. For the CPCE nothing has changed so far (none announced by CCE as of Oct 30, 2026), but the NCE switches format on July 1, 2027 (170 questions, pass at 360). Side by side, with fees and eligibility: NCE vs CPCE.
4 sample questions from four areas
Question 1 of 4 · Assessment and Testing · 12.5%
A school reports each graduate's class rank (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and so on). On which scale of measurement are these data?
Ranks put graduates in order without showing how far apart they are, the defining property of ordinal data; medians and percentiles suit it, means do not.
Nominal data are unordered categories, such as a declared major; rank numbers carry order, so they are more than labels.
Interval data need equal distances between points, as standard scores have; the gap between 1st and 2nd in class rank can differ greatly from the gap between 2nd and 3rd.
Question 2 of 4 · Group Counseling and Group Work · 12.5%
Which group variable has the most consistent research link to positive member outcomes?
Session length is a scheduling choice set by setting and population; no comparable body of research links it to member outcomes.
Meta-analyses by Burlingame and colleagues tie members' sense of belonging and bond with the group to better outcomes across settings, making cohesion the group counterpart of the therapeutic alliance.
Differences between leaders' theoretical models show small effects next to relationship factors; choosing the model reflects the common belief that technique matters more than the bond among members.
Question 3 of 4 · Research and Program Evaluation · 12.5%
In hypothesis testing, what does statistical power represent?
Power is the probability of rejecting a false null hypothesis, 1 minus beta, that is, the chance of detecting an effect that really exists; .80 is the usual target, and power rises with sample size, alpha, and effect size.
Variance explained, such as r squared or eta squared, is an effect size; it is one input that determines power, not power itself.
Rejecting a true null hypothesis is a Type I error, whose probability is alpha; swapping alpha for power is the classic mix-up of the four decision outcomes.
Question 4 of 4 · Social and Cultural Diversity · 12.5%
A White coworker tells a Latino counselor, 'I don't think of you as Latino; I just see you as a person.' In Sue's taxonomy, what is this?
Environmental microaggressions are carried by settings and systems, such as buildings named only for White men; this is an interpersonal remark, not a feature of the environment.
A microassault is a deliberate, explicit attack such as a slur; the coworker means the remark kindly, and that unintended quality separates it from a microassault.
Color-blind remarks such as 'I just see you as a person' deny the relevance of a person's racial and ethnic experience, which Sue and colleagues classify as a microinvalidation.

Testing lasts 225 minutes; the whole appointment runs 255, with a 15-minute scheduled break after question 80.
Does passing the CPCE give me a license or the NCC?
No. It is an exam of your program, not of a licensing board. For a license you still sit the NCE or the NCMHCE, and the NCC has its own route.
How much does the CPCE cost?
It depends on where you test: $75 or $150 as of Oct 2026. Each retake is paid again; what else can change the bill is on CPCE cost.
My program gives the CECE. Is that the same test?
No. The Counselor Education Comprehensive Examination is a different exam over the same eight areas, with 120 questions, used by schools such as FGCU and UW Oshkosh. It is not a CCE exam; follow your program's instructions for it.
