The MFT exam, the national LMFT licensing test

AMFTRB Examination in Marital and Family Therapy

The MFT exam, formally the AMFTRB Examination in Marital and Family Therapy, is the test a state board asks for before it licenses a marriage and family therapist. It counts toward marriage and family therapist licensure (LMFT) in every state except California. You sit it once your board approves you, at a Prometric center, and the form changes with the first window of 2027.

The 2026 form and the 2027 form

Two handbooks are in force at once, and which one applies depends on your window, not on the day you apply.

  • Windows through December 2026 follow the 2026 edition (revised April 30, 2026): every one of the 180 questions counts, and the fee is the 2026 figure in the table.
  • 2027 windows follow the 2027 edition (revised August 24, 2026). From the January 2027 window: 155 scored and 25 pretest questions, two-week windows, a $389 fee and results in about four weeks. You apply for the first 2027 window while still in 2026; the table lists that deadline.

The content does not move: both editions use the same six domains at the same weights. AMFTRB's own exam reference page still says all items are counted, which is true only until the 2026 windows end. Prep sites that print one fixed format are describing one of the two.

Six domains of nearly equal weight

No domain is small. Ethics, law and professional standards is the largest at 19%; designing and conducting treatment takes 17%; each of the other four is 16%. Each one links to a page of practice items for that domain.

California uses its own exams

AMFTRB names California as the only state that does not use this exam (roadmap). Its Board of Behavioral Sciences gives the LMFT California Law and Ethics Exam and then the California LMFT Clinical Exam, both through Pearson VUE (BBS). Practice sets and prep courses sold for those exams are not built on the six national domains. Every state's route: how to become an LMFT.

4 sample questions, every option explained

Question 1 of 4 · Assessing, Hypothesizing, and Diagnosing · 16%

A couple argues in session about whose turn it was to pay a bill. The therapist says, "I notice that when you raise your voice, she goes quiet, and then you get louder." The therapist is focusing on

  1. Naming the sequence (he raises his voice, she goes quiet, he gets louder) is attention to process: how the couple interacts, regardless of the topic.
  2. Content would be the bill itself, whose turn it was to pay; the therapist's remark says nothing about the bill.
  3. Positive connotation (Milan) ascribes a benevolent purpose to each person's behavior; the therapist here only describes the sequence and assigns no motive.
  4. An exception is a solution-focused search for times the problem did not happen; this remark describes the problem pattern while it is happening.
Question 2 of 4 · Assessing, Hypothesizing, and Diagnosing · 16%

A therapist is formulating a hypothesis about a 9-year-old's disruptive behavior in class. Which statement BEST illustrates circular causality?

  1. Divorce, then less supervision, then grades, then outbursts is a longer chain, but it never feeds back to its first link, so it remains linear causality.
  2. Blaming inconsistent discipline as the direct cause is a single cause producing a single effect: a textbook linear explanation.
  3. This loop returns to its start: outbursts bring criticism, criticism raises parental tension, and that tension feeds the next outburst, which is what circular causality means.
  4. Temperament causing outbursts that cause criticism runs one way only; the criticism is never shown to feed back into more outbursts, so the chain stays linear.
Question 3 of 4 · Evaluating Ongoing Process and Terminating Treatment · 16%

At the final session with a family who came in because of their 10-year-old's tantrums, the therapist's closing remarks should MOST emphasize:

  1. Highlighting the techniques credits the therapist's tools rather than the family, which weakens the family's ownership of the change.
  2. Crediting each member's part treats the change as a property of the whole family system, which makes it more likely to hold after therapy ends.
  3. Focusing on the child's self-control puts him back in the identified-patient role, as if the change happened only inside him.
  4. Praising only the parents' discipline narrows the change to one subsystem and leaves out the child's and other members' contributions.
Question 4 of 4 · The Practice of Systemic Therapy · 16%

A therapist's primary aim is to help each family member raise self-esteem and communicate congruently, using sculpting and family reconstruction. This therapist is MOST likely following:

  1. Bowen therapy aims at differentiation of self and lower anxiety through calm, coached work on the family of origin, not experiential sculpting.
  2. The MRI brief model targets the attempted solutions that keep a problem going; self-esteem and family reconstruction are not part of it.
  3. Minuchin's structural therapy aims at boundaries, subsystems and hierarchy through joining, enactment and unbalancing, not self-esteem or sculpting.
  4. Raising self-esteem, congruent communication, sculpting and family reconstruction are signatures of Virginia Satir's human validation process model.

Answer every question to see your score

From approval to results

  1. Board approval. AMFTRB does not decide who may sit; your board does, and it issues the approval code (13-character code). Degree and supervised-hour rules are on how to become an LMFT.
  2. Apply for a window. Applications go to Professional Testing Corporation by the deadline of the window you choose; there are monthly windows (dates).
  3. Reserve a seat. Testing is at Prometric test centers only. The clock runs for 4 hours (240 minutes).
  4. Wait for the score. The email comes after the whole window closes, not after your own appointment; the timing is in the table.
  5. If you fail. You may retest at most once per calendar quarter, with a new application, approval code and full fee (what a second attempt costs).

The national MFT exam, quick answers

Is the "AAMFT exam" the same test?

Yes, people often call it that, but AAMFT is the professional association that writes the Code of Ethics. The exam belongs to AMFTRB, the association of state regulatory boards, and Professional Testing Corporation runs it.

Do I need it for a California LMFT?

No. California tests LMFT applicants with two BBS exams of its own. Every other board's route, exam included, is on state requirements.

How many of the questions count?

Every one of them in a 2026 window. From the January 2027 window on, only 155 count; the other 25 are pretest items with no marking.

Is there a published pass mark or pass rate?

Neither. Each form gets its own equated pass point, and no pass rate appears in AMFTRB's materials: how the score works.
