CPCE study guide, eight areas, one weight

There is no official CPCE study guide. The exam owner publishes a textbook list and the August 2024 content outline, and the outline is the better place to start: every CACREP area carries 12.5% of the exam, 17 scored questions each, so no area can be skipped and none can carry you. The plan below spends time evenly, then shifts it toward the courses you took longest ago.

A plan by the outline

Give each area one study block, plus a ninth for timed review. Put first the areas you finished earliest in your program; a course you are taking now needs the least time. Each link opens the area page, shared with the NCE, with its common traps and practice questions.

  1. Professional orientation: where the profession came from, credentialing terms that get confused, advocacy, supervision and counselor wellness. Code-level ethics is on counseling ethics.
  2. Social and cultural diversity: the multicultural and social justice competencies (MSJCC), racial and sexual identity development, acculturation, broaching culture in session.
  3. Human growth and development: Piaget, Erikson and Kohlberg side by side, attachment styles, conditioning, why addiction starts.
  4. Career development: trait-factor, life-span and social-learning career theories, plus the occupational information systems clients use.
  5. Helping relationships: listening skills, how a counseling relationship unfolds, crisis work and consultation. Named theories are on counseling theories.
  6. Group counseling: Yalom's factors, Tuckman vs Corey stages, member screening and leader interventions.
  7. Assessment and testing: the types of reliability and validity, standard error bands, z and T scores, stanines.
  8. Research and program evaluation: choosing a design and a test, Type I vs Type II error, needs assessment and program evaluation.

Traps of this exam, not of an area

  • Testing time: plan your pace on 225 minutes. The 4 hours 15 minutes some guides quote is the whole appointment.
  • Hidden pretest items: three per area are unscored and unmarked. Treat every question as scored.
  • Your program's extras: essays or a specialty section may be added and scored by the program. Ask before you plan.
  • NCE weighting: NCE material follows NBCC's domains, where Areas of Clinical Focus alone is 29% of the current form. This exam has no clinical domain; keep the eight areas even.

The textbook list, and its date

The list the exam owner links as study material is dated 2014 (textbook list, p. 1). It ranks, area by area, the books programs assigned most often, and says item writers refer to them, without endorsing any. Among the titles ranked near the top of their areas: Corey's Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy, Sue and Sue's Counseling the Culturally Diverse, Santrock's Life-Span Development, Yalom and the Coreys on groups, Zunker on career counseling.

The editions have aged. It lists the DSM-5 of 2013, not the DSM-5-TR of 2022; the 6th edition APA manual; the 2014 ACA Code, which is still in force as of Oct 2026. Its area names (Helping Relationships, Group Work, Assessment) are older than the 2024 outline's. Use the current edition of a listed title rather than hunting for the one named.

NCE books and commercial guides

Because the areas are the same, most NCE prep covers this exam too, and some books cover both in one volume; see the NCE study guide. Skip the NCE-only parts: the clinical-focus domain, the NBCC domain weights and the NCE format change of July 1, 2027.

Commercial guides, Mometrix's among them, are not reviewed by the exam owner. Check that a guide's area list matches the 2024 outline and that it does not present one school's cut as the passing score; how the cut works.

The last two weeks

Take one timed run of 160 questions in 225 minutes: that is about 84 seconds a question (our arithmetic), with the break after question 80. Score it by area and spend the remaining days on the two lowest. The practice test mixes the areas in the outline's even split.

Study questions

Is there a CPCE study guide PDF?

No study guide. The exam owner posts three PDFs worth having: the candidate handbook (rev. March 25, 2025), the content outline (Aug 2024) and the textbook list (2014).

Do NCE study guides work for the CPCE?

Mostly. Both exams cover the eight CACREP areas; leave out the NCE's clinical-focus domain and its own format rules.

Which area should I study first?

The one you took longest ago. The weights are equal, so the order is set by how much you have forgotten, not by the outline.
