MFT exam passing score, set form by form
AMFTRB prints no cut score you could aim for. The pass point is fixed separately for each form of the exam and equated across forms, and your score is simply how many you got right. Nor does AMFTRB publish a pass rate, so any percentage you see for the national exam comes from somewhere else.

How the pass point is set
The 2026 handbook (pp. 11–12 of the print) describes two steps.
- A standard on one form. Subject-matter experts judge, item by item, how a minimally competent marriage and family therapist would do. That modified Angoff study sets the pass point on an anchor form.
- The same standard on every other form. Each new form is equated to the anchor, so a tougher form passes at a lower raw count and an easier form at a higher one.
Your reported score is simply the number you got right, so an unanswered item is just a lost point.
What changes in 2027
From the January 2027 window, 155 of the items are scored and 25 are pretest items. Those do not count and are scattered at random (2027 handbook, p. 27), so the pass point applies to the scored items only. AMFTRB has not published the 2027 cut, and neither do we; pages that print a number for it are guessing.
In practice nothing about your strategy changes. You cannot tell the pretest items apart, so every question still deserves a real answer.
Why there is no pass rate
AMFTRB does not publish a pass rate for this exam. We looked in both handbooks, the exam reference page and the candidate roadmap, and found none. Percentages on prep-company pages are their own estimates or their customers' results.
California's Board of Behavioral Sciences does publish statistics, but for its own LMFT exams, which are different tests from this one; they say nothing about the national exam.
Reading your score report
The report gives your total and a score in each of the six domains; how long it stays online is on exam info. After a fail, the domain scores are the only feedback you get: the items themselves cannot be reviewed or challenged. Put most of your retake time into the two weakest domains, using their pages and the practice test.
How hard is it?
Without a published rate, the honest answer is structural. Six domains of 16% to 19% leave no safe area to skip, the official practice exams give no answer key, and the ethics domain follows a code revised in 2026.

MFT scoring, quick answers
Does a fixed raw score always pass?
Not across forms. Each form has its own pass point, equated to the same standard, and AMFTRB does not publish it in advance.
Should I guess when I am unsure?
Yes. The score is the number of correct answers, with no penalty for a wrong one.
What happens if I miss by a point or two?
Scores close to the pass point are hand-verified before release. A paid verification costs $35 ($50 from 2027). If the fail stands, you can apply again: once per quarter.
