CRC exam pass rate, window by window

The Commission publishes a first-time pass rate for each testing window, and the last three, checked on Oct 30, 2026, ran from 45% (79 of 176) to 61% (154 of 251). It publishes no pass rate for repeat candidates and no number-correct passing score, because each of the two sections has its own cut on a scaled score.

Facts checked Oct 30, 2026 against the testing organizations; sources are listed under Source notes. Pass rates as the CRCC exam overview lists them: first-time candidates in the last three windows.

Three windows, three different results

The rate swung by 16 points between its October 2025 low and its March 2026 high, and March was also the largest of the three windows. Add the three together and 54% (290 of 537) of first-time candidates passed (our arithmetic on the published counts).

The July and October 2026 figures were not on the Commission's page when we checked. Its own list of what moves the rate is short: the counseling program's curriculum, including the internship; how the candidate prepared; and whether the program's educators hold the CRC themselves (exam overview).

How the passing score is set

The certification guide describes how the cut is set, step by step (Section 13):

  1. Two sections, scored apart. One covers rehabilitation and disability, the other counseling, and both have to be passed in one administration. A strong section does not offset a weak one.
  2. A panel sets each cut. In a modified-Angoff study, experts judged, question by question, how likely a minimally competent candidate would be to answer correctly; the averages became recommended cuts for each section, which the Commission then adopted.
  3. Forms are equated. Several forms are in use at once, and some are slightly harder than others, so a fixed number correct would not be fair. Equating adjusts for that.
  4. Raw scores become scaled scores. The equated number correct is converted to a common scale, and that is what the cut is applied to.

On test day you see only the outcome: a preliminary pass, or a fail with a diagnostic score profile.

There is no fixed 65 or 70 percent

Prep sites still quote a fixed percentage to pass. The Commission's guide says the opposite in so many words: passing scores cannot be set as specific raw scores, because forms differ in difficulty. Aim to be solid on both sections rather than at a number. A 70 percent figure online usually belongs to AAPC's Certified Risk Adjustment Coder, a different exam that also goes by CRC.

How hard is the exam, in facts rather than opinions

  • Length: 175 questions in 210 minutes, about 72 seconds per question, and the two sections run back to back unless you have approved extra time.
  • Breadth: 12 domains, from disability law and medical conditions to job placement and insurance, which a counseling program alone may not cover.
  • The conjunctive rule: candidates with strong clinical training can fail on the rehabilitation section, and the reverse.
  • The numbers above: a little under half of first-time candidates did not pass.

One caution from the Commission itself: it objects to using exam results to compare educational programs, or for any purpose other than certification (certification guide, Section 13). A program's pass rate is not a ranking.

If you do not pass

Start with the diagnostic profile you receive at the test site: it shows which content areas pulled you down, and that tells you which section to rebuild. You get one more try on the same application, in the window right after this one, at $275. What a second sitting costs: CRC cost. Domain-by-domain questions: CRC practice test.

CRC pass rate, quick answers

How many questions must I get right?

None is published, and none could be: each section has its own cut, applied to a scaled score after the forms are equated. A passing candidate is told only "Pass".

Is there a pass rate for people retaking the exam?

Not on the Commission's page as of Oct 30, 2026. Its published series covers first-time candidates only.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the exam overview page of the Commission, which lists the last three windows with the number of first-time candidates and how many passed. We added the three windows together for the combined figure.
