CRC exam study guide, planned by the blueprint
Plan for two exams in one. The Rehabilitation and Disability section and the Counseling section each have their own cut, so the weaker one decides your result. This guide sorts the 12 domains by section, turns their weights into an eight-week plan and lists the material worth your time.

Sort the domains by section first
Every competency in the blueprint is tagged [R] or [C], for the section it feeds (exam overview). Four domains are rehabilitation-only, three are counseling-only, and five mix both:
- Rehabilitation and Disability only: medical and psychosocial aspects (9.3%), community resources (8%), business engagement (7.6%), health care and disability management (7.3%).
- Counseling only: case management (10%), crisis and trauma (6%), group and family counseling (4.7%).
- Both: counseling theories and techniques (11.3%), professional orientation and ethics (10.7%), assessment and occupational analysis (10.7%), career development and job placement (9.3%), research and performance management (5.3%).
If your degree is in mental health counseling, social work or psychology, the first list is where your hours should go. If you come from a rehabilitation counseling program, check the counseling-only list against your coursework.
An eight-week plan by weight
A suggested order, not an official one. Heavier weeks carry more of the exam, and each week ends with that domain's questions on this site.
- Weeks 1–2, law and ethics plus case management (10.7% and 10%): the Rehabilitation Act sections, the ADA and the 2023 CRCC Code first, because they reappear inside other domains. Pages: ethics and disability law, case and disability management.
- Weeks 3–4, medical aspects with crisis and trauma, then assessment (9.3%, 6% and 10.7%): conditions and their work implications, then turning functional limits into job options. Pages: medical and psychosocial aspects, assessment and occupational analysis.
- Week 5, counseling theories and techniques (11.3%): refresh the named theories once on counseling theories, then spend the time on how they are used with disability, substance use and psychiatric rehabilitation: CRC theories and techniques.
- Week 6, employment (9.3%, 7.6%): placement models, employer work and accommodation. Pages: career development and job placement, community and business.
- Week 7, benefits and insurance (8%, 7.3%): Social Security work incentives, Medicare and Medicaid, disability insurance and workers' compensation.
- Week 8, the small domains and a full run (4.7%, 5.3%): both appear only in the practice test; take it whole, then sort your misses by section.
Books written before 2022 miss whole topics
The blueprint in force dates from the 2021 job task analysis and took effect in March 2022. It marks several subtopics as new, and a review book built on the earlier outline skips them: the ADAAA changes to the definition of disability and the interactive process, WIOA, veterans' benefits, transferable skills analysis, labor market analysis, dual diagnosis, mental health screeners, apprenticeships and on-the-job training, the dual-customer role with employers, benefits counseling and community inclusion (2022 blueprint, PDF). The ethics code tested is the CRCC 2023 edition, not the 2017 one.
Where candidates lose points
Each domain page has a short list of the mix-ups it tests most. The ones that cost the most points across the exam:
- Which Rehabilitation Act section covers whom: ethics and disability law.
- Impairment, functional limitation and disability as separate ideas: medical and psychosocial aspects.
- Transferable skills analysis, job analysis and labor market survey: assessment.
- Supported employment, customized employment and IPS: career development and job placement.
- SSI against SSDI and the work incentives that go with each: community and business.
- Medicare against Medicaid, and short-term against long-term disability: case and disability management.
Material worth your time

- The 2023 code. Read the CRCC Code of Professional Ethics once in full; it is free on the Commission's site. How it differs from the ACA Code: counseling ethics.
- Textbooks programs teach from. Rehabilitation Counseling: Basics and Beyond, the Handbook of Rehabilitation Counseling, and Medical, Psychosocial and Vocational Aspects of Disability. Check the edition year against the 2022 blueprint before you rely on a used copy.

CRC preparation, quick answers
How many weeks should I give this plan?
The Commission does not say. The plan above takes eight weeks of steady work; if your degree is not in rehabilitation counseling, add time to the four rehabilitation-only domains.
Do I need to memorize counseling theories in depth?
You need the main theories and their techniques, but they are only part of 11.3%; the rest asks you to use counseling skills where a disability, an addiction or a psychiatric illness is part of the picture.
Is the CRCC Code different from the ACA Code?
Yes, in places the exam likes to test: the CRCC Code has a whole section on advocacy and accessibility and a lifetime bar on relationships with vulnerable former clients. The CRCC Code is covered on ethics and disability law, the ACA Code on counseling ethics.
